Debate: Shortstop of the Future

Shortstop is one of the most important positions in baseball. Modern day baseball fans have been fortunate enough to watch the masterful Derek Jeter’s career play out before their eyes, and we saw an extremely talented SS taken number one overall in this year’s draft (Carlos Correa). However, who do MLB fans have to look forward to in the next generation of great shortstops?

Furthermore, of today’s young major league shortstops, whom would you want to build your team around?

Elvis Andrus (TEX)

-Reason for: Very young, huge upside

-Reason against: Limited power

Asdrubal Cabrera (CLE)

-Reason for: Stellar defense and growing offensive prowess

-Reason against: Too many strikeouts

Starlin Castro (CHC)

-Reason for: Very young, pure hitter

-Reason against: Inconsistency

Ian Desmond (WSH)

-Reason for: Tremendous power stroke

-Reason against: Too many strikeouts

Dee Gordon (LAD)

-Reason for: Fastest SS in MLB

-Reason against: Poor defensive ability

My pick: Asdrubal CabreraMy reasoning: I am a complete sucker for defense and Cabrera is the best defender of this young group. Also, last season showed that he is a legitimate offensive producer, even when his team does not provide him with a ton of opportunities to drive in runs.

That’s my pick. Which one of these stars would you build around? The debate gauntlet has been thrown down! Tweet @MLBFanCave and @KyleOKC with your opinion.
