Game One of the 2012 World Series on FOX will be dedicated to Stand Up To Cancer (SU2C) to promote the importance of advancing the fight against cancer and will also include Season 11 American Idol winner and singer-songwriter Phillip Phillips performing the National Anthem.  Game One will take place on Wednesday, October 24th at 7:30 p.m. ET on FOX featuring the San Francisco Giants vs. Detroit Tigers.

STAND UP TO CANCER: The dedication of Game One to Stand Up To Cancer will feature a special in-game tribute when the entire ballpark will stand united and hold placards with the names of loved ones affected by the disease paying tribute to those in the fight against cancer.  This will take place after the bottom of the fifth inning. Fans watching the game on FOX are encouraged to declare who they stand up for on Facebook by going to istandupfor.su2c.org, following #IStandUpFor on Twitter or by going to SU2C.org to learn more about how to donate and get involved.  The flow of social activity and conversations supporting #IStandUpFor, including Twitter and Instagram, will be accessible at MLB.com/IStandUpFor. A spot staring Steve Carell, Ken Jeong and Colin Hanks “standing up to cancer” will also air.  Carell, Hanks and Jeong, all of whom have become Stand Up To Cancer ambassadors due to their personal connections to the cause, took to the field at Fenway Park to re-create signature moments in baseball history that led fans across the nation to believe that anything was possible.  Before the game, baseball legends, team officials and MLB and SU2C executives will visit the UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital in San Francisco that specializes in treating cancer patients.  They will be joined by the Starlight Children’s Foundation who will place a Starlight Fun Center mobile entertainment unit for young patients.  The Fun Center is designed to combat the anxiety and weariness faced by hospitalized children and includes a Nintendo Wii™ gaming system, a TV and a DVD player.  In 2008, MLB became the founding donor to Stand Up To Cancer.  Major League Baseball and its 30 Clubs have donated more than $30 million to the groundbreaking initiative since its inception. Stand Up To Cancer is a program of the Entertainment Industry Foundation, a 501(c)(3) charitable organization representing the collective philanthropy of the film and television industries.

MASTERCARD: MasterCard will give fans entering the ballpark a special Stand Up To Cancer World Series themed bracelet to wear throughout the game to show their support.  On-field prior to the start of the game, MasterCard will present a $4 million contribution to Stand Up To Cancer signifying the culmination of the Dine and Be Generous campaign. Through the program, which launched at the MLB All-Star Game in July, MasterCard made a contribution to SU2C when cardholders spent $10 or more for a meal on their MasterCard cards, up to $4 million (U.S.). To acknowledge the millions of consumers who helped contribute to the donation, MasterCard debuted a “Thank You” spot during the broadcast of the 2012 National League Division Series on FOX.  The spot features Red Sox pitcher and cancer survivor Jon Lester along with 9-year-old cancer patient Justin Miller, who was recently featured in SU2C’s live telecast in September. Lester, who beat non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, donated his time to film the spot.

PERFORMANCES: Season 11 American Idol winner and singer-songwriter Phillip Phillips will perform the National Anthem prior to Game One.  Phillips, who played baseball as a teenager, performed his hit song “Home” on-field before the 2012 All-Star Game.  The same day that Phillips claimed his victory in American Idol’s Season 11 finale, the 22-year-old singer/guitarist released “Home,” a debut single that showcases his rich, raspy vocals and masterful guitar skills – and marked the highest debut on the Billboard Digital songs chart with 278,000 downloads sold.  Now, with a Billboard Hot 100 top-ten debut under his belt, Phillips debut album “World From the Side of the Moon,” will be released November 19th on 19 Entertainment/Interscope Records.

GAME BALL: The game ball will be delivered by Mario Barajas of the Boys & Girls Clubs of San Francisco.
