Experiment with Utley at third officially over
"For now, yeah," Utley said before Monday's game against the Nationals at Nationals Park.
General manager Ruben Amaro Jr. and manager Charlie Manuel spoke at length on Friday about why they thought the move from second to third was not feasible with just six games remaining in the season. Utley gave his opinion on Monday as to why it wouldn't work.
"I don't know if that's the right terminology," he said. "I think as Ruben and I talked, playing six games there, he didn't think that it'd be that beneficial. And I agreed with him."
Asked if he would try to work out at third base in the offseason, Utley said that practice in a controlled environment is nothing compared with real-life game situations, which is what he needs.
"So at this point I'm still a second baseman," he said.
Could he try again in Spring Training?
"Hopefully, I'll be healthy in Spring Training," he said.
