Have a Catch

June 18, 2021

As part of the "Have A Catch" campaign, the Orioles are once again encouraging fans to go outside and #HaveaCatch. Expanding upon Major League Baseball's PLAY BALL campaign, the Orioles encourage children, and fans of all ages, to go outside and enjoy a game of catch throughout the week.

In support of the campaign, on June 15, the Orioles hosted an event with Armistead Gardens Elementary School, located in Baltimore City, on their last day of school. Students received coaching from Orioles' Hall of Famer Al Bumbry, The Oriole Bird, and Orioles staff.

At the event, Bumbry shared with kids why he loves playing baseball and the basic mechanics of catching, throwing, and fielding. The kids threw with their opposite hands, counted how many times they can catch and throw in a row, and hit off the tee.

The event's main attraction was the prize wheel, also referred to as “The Wheel of Fun.” Each student had the opportunity to spin the wheel in hopes of landing on an item that was used as an alternative to baseballs. The children got to choose from a variety of options, including water balloons, frisbees, and eggs.

By playing catch with different objects, students learned that equipment like gloves is not necessary when playing catch. As part of the campaign, the Orioles were able to donate "Have A Catch" foam baseballs, Orioles caps, and T-shirts to encourage children to start their summer off right with a game of catch.

The "Have A Catch" campaign encourages children to get outside, be active, and have fun while exploring creative ways to play a simple game of catch. In garnering support for this initiative, celebrities such as Lisa Fernandez, Kasie Hunt, LOCASH, and US Senators Cardin and Van Hollen have gone out and #HaveaCatch.

This Father’s Day weekend, the Orioles encourage you to take a video or photo playing catch and post on Twitter using #HaveACatch! Now, get outside, and Have A Catch!
