Phillies and MLB Reveal New Independence Floor at Veterans Multi-Service Center
On Monday, July 13, as a continuation of the All-Star Legacy initiative, Major League Baseball and Phillies Charities, Inc. debuted critical infrastructure upgrades and a new “Independence Floor” at the Veterans Multi-Service Center in Old City, Philadelphia.
Since 1980, the VMC has provided comprehensive services to veterans, including housing, employment assistance, and mental health resources. This major joint donation funds the repair of the VMC’s elevator and the total renovation of the facility's 5th floor into the ‘Independence Floor.’ The critical project ensures that local veterans can safely access mental health resources and other essential services in a modernized, fully accessible environment. Highlighting the deep community connection, local Philadelphia artists and veterans from Operation Mud have created custom pieces of art for the floor. Also introduced to the space is Heroic Gardens, a therapeutic indoor plant environment.
Special guests at Monday’s event included MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred, Phillies Managing Partner & CEO John Middleton, Pennsylvania Lieutenant Governor Austin Davis and VMC Executive Director Joe Brooks.
As part of MLB All-Star Week, Phillies Charities, Inc. and Major League Baseball made a combined investment of more than $5.5 million into communities in the city of Philadelphia, with projects that empower underserved communities by expanding access to baseball and softball for youth, supporting our veterans and providing essential education and nutritional resources. The 2026 All-Star Legacy Projects were commemorated throughout the week leading up to the 96th MLB All-Star Game presented by Mastercard.
