First MLB Meeting for Rasmus Brothers

Tonight’s Atlanta Braves-Toronto Blue Jays match-up represented the first meeting between brothers Colby and Cory Rasmus in the Majors. The Rasmus brothers were teammates on the Phenix City, Alabama Little League team that won the United States Championship in 1999 (they fell 5-0 to Hirakata Little League in the LLWS finals). Their father Tony, who was himself a 10th round pick for the California Angels in 1986, was the coach of that squad.

Colby, 26, was then drafted 28th overall in the 2005 draft by the Cardinals, while Cory, 25, was selected 38th overall by the Braves in 2006. Their younger brother Casey, 23, was taken by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 36th round of the 2011 draft and is currently in A-ball.

Despite playing on the same teams growing up, it was the first time the two squared off on opposing sides. “It’s very exciting,” Cory said before the game. “Me and Colby always talked about if I [would] ever get to face him or whatever. It’ll be pretty exciting. It’ll be fun.” When Colby was asked who was the better player between them, the Blue Jays outfielder jokingly responded, “We mess around about this a little bit, but he knows who's better. That's all that matters.”

And Colby backed that bravado up tonight, lining a sharp double the other way off of his younger brother.
