MadBum prompts thoughts of no-no vs. Padres

SAN FRANCISCO -- Madison Bumgarner took a no-hitter into the seventh inning Monday before allowing a hit to Justin Upton, one of the few blights in a dominant start as the Giants defeated the Padres, 2-0, at AT&T Park.

Bumgarner (3-1) allowed consecutive singles to Upton and Yangervis Solarte to begin the seventh inning but little else. He allowed one walk and had six strikeouts in 7 1/3 innings.

"Felt good today," Bumgarner said. "Everything's coming together finally. Delivery feels good. All my stuff feels good. Command, everything."

The Giants (13-13) got both runs in the third inning as Angel Pagan singled in a run and Justin Maxwell walked with the bases loaded against Tyson Ross, who started for the Padres (14-13).

Ross (1-3) struggled early, allowing 10 baserunners in the first four innings. But he settled down thereafter, allowing two runs on seven hits in seven innings with three walks and five strikeouts.

"I just wasn't very sharp early and wasn't executing pitches. After that rough inning, I was able to kind of regroup and get back to my game plan," Ross said.

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
No more no-no: The Padres, no-hit at AT&T Park in 2009 by Jonathan Sanchez and again last season by Tim Lincecum, managed to avoid being on the wrong end of history for a third time when Upton singled to start the seventh inning. All told, the Giants have three no-hitters against the Padres since 2009, including another by Lincecum in 2013.

"I was still a pretty good ways away from that," Bumgarner said of his no-hit bid.

Owning Ross: Pagan's RBI single in the third inning gave the Giants their first run. It was the second of two hits he had against Ross, giving him seven hits in 14 career at-bats against the Padres starter. The hit in the third inning was good for his eighth RBI this season.

Loud outs: If you can believe it, Ross had some of the hardest contact all night against Bumgarner. First, he was robbed of a single on a dandy play by shortstop Brandon Crawford in the third inning and then flied out to deep right field to end the fifth inning as Maxwell kept drifting back on the ball

"We hit a couple balls to right that were hit pretty solid. We didn't really drive the ball tonight. [Bumgarner] had us in check. They gave us some opportunities, they opened the door a little and we couldn't capitalize," said Padres manager Bud Black. More >

Third-inning rally: The Giants made Ross labor early, pushing across two runs in the third before he found a rhythm. Nori Aoki led off the frame with a walk before stealing second and scoring on an RBI single by Pagan. Maxwell made the score 2-0 Giants when he drew a bases-loaded walk. But Casey McGehee killed the threat with an inning-ending double play, his MLB-leading ninth of the year.

QUOTABLE
"I wanted him to get a hit against Bumgarner. He's going to play soon enough. He's going to get his feet wet moving forward. We wanted him to hit. We thought he was our best option against a tough lefty." -- Black on getting rookie catcher Austin Hedges, recalled earlier in the day, an at-bat in the eighth inning. Hedges struck out. More >

SOUND SMART WITH YOUR FRIENDS
Shutting out the Padres isn't easy. Not when you have an offense that entered Monday with the most runs in the National League (131), averaging a shade over five runs a game. This was the third time this season the Padres have been blanked -- and the second time by the Giants.

For the first time since June 19, 1933, the Giants shut out their opponent despite committing four errors. More >

MAD TURNAROUND
The last time Bumgarner faced the Padres he didn't fare nearly as well as he did Monday. On April 11 at Petco Park, he allowed five earned runs on 10 hits in three innings. More >

WHAT'S NEXT
Padres: The Padres will send No. 3 starter Andrew Cashner to the mound at 7:15 p.m. PT Tuesday in the second game of the three-game series. Cashner is coming off a start where he struck out 10 in seven innings against the Astros.

Giants: For Tuesday's 7:15 p.m. PT tilt, Ryan Vogelsong will make his fourth start of the year and third since replacing Jake Peavy (injured back) in the rotation. Vogelsong was knocked around in his last start, giving up six earned runs to the Dodgers over three innings, and has a 9.31 season ERA.
