Intriguing Potential September Call-ups

Here are five minor leaguers that might see themselves in The Show in September with teams vying for a Postseason spot.

Billy Hamilton (@b_ham_3), SS, Cincinnati Reds, currently in AA Pensacola

If you haven’t heard by now, Hamilton is the fastest baseball player on the planet. He is averaging more than one stolen base per game, and he even stole a base in 2.889 seconds. Few things are faster than him, and I think that the Reds would be crazy to leave that speed in AA as they make their playoff push. Not many players can turn a single or a walk into a triple in two pitches.

Kolten Wong (@KoltenWong), 2B, St. Louis Cardinals, currently in AA Springfield

Wong is one of the most exciting prospects in the Cardinals organization. His potential even garnered him an appearance in this year’s All-Star Futures Game in Kansas City. He is a “spark plug” type of player who could provide a big-time boost during a key stretch of the season. Without a doubt, he is the future at second base for St. Louis.

Michael Choice (@VinnyChoice), OF, Oakland Athletics, currently in AA Midland

Choice is a future star for the A’s in their outfield, and his pop could land him on their Major League roster. Oakland leads the league in walk off wins, and their knack for getting timely extra-base hits is key for that. Choice could be an effective option off of the bench specifically for his XBH potential.

Nick Castellanos, 3B, Detroit Tigers, currently in AA Erie

Last year, the Tigers got major second-half boosts from Verlander and Cabrera, and in order to make the Postseason, they will need that again. Castellanos has the potential to come in and perform when he is needed. He is a good contact hitter with some pop, and he could definitely fill in at 3B, which could allow Miggy to move to DH for select games down the stretch.

Trevor Bauer (@BauerOutage), RHP, Arizona Diamondbacks, currently in AAA Reno

Even with his struggles at the highest level this season, it seems clear that Bauer is destined to be at the top of the Diamondbacks’ rotation. Being sent back down to Triple-A earlier this season could serve as a reality check and a humbling experience for the young gun that may propel him to come back sharp and motivated in September.
