Is James Andrews Hall Worthy?

It isn’t just MLB players who make contributions to the game of baseball. There are a great deal of people who put the pieces in place to make a game happen. From the front office to the concession stand, everyone has a roll to play.

Yet only players, managers, umpires, executives and baseball writers are admitted to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown. However, I think that there is a special person who should receive consideration for his direct contributions to the continuity of the game. He never set foot on the field, but he makes it possible for others to do so. I am talking about Dr. James Andrews.

Dr. Andrews is renowned as one of the best orthopedic surgeons in the world, and he specializes in fixing knee, elbow and shoulder injuries. He has helped athletes from a plethora of sports get back in peak physical condition. For MLB specifically, he has helped superstars like Albert Pujols, John Smoltz, Andy Pettitte and others with their various injuries.

Now, I know that Dr. Andrews never even had an at-bat in the Majors, but his direct assistance to the aforementioned All-Star players have helped to change the landscape of the game. World Series championships may well have been won on his operating table.

It may seem like a stretch to consider a surgeon as a Nation Baseball Hall of Famer, but I think that he at the least deserves a look. What are your thoughts?
