Before the news broke that Detroit Tigers ace Justin Verlander inked an enormous contract extension, the former Cy Young winner and MVP set Twitter ablaze Friday morning with a cute but ferocious addition to his family.

“Riley” is Verlander’s adorable dog, who ranks up there with David Price’s “Astro,” Adam Jones’ “Missy” and Sandy Alderson’s “Buddy” as MLB’s cutest social media canines.

Verlander’s big day continued into the afternoon when news surfaced that he signed a five-year extension, surpassing Felix Hernandez’s $175 million contract to become MLB’s highest-paid pitcher.
