Let's Hear It For Corky Miller

Corky Miller is starting tonight at catcher for the Cincinnati Reds. One look at the guy and you can tell he’s a bad ass dude who’s actually also really nice and good with children and owns three big dogs that greet him every night by wrestling in the doorway, licking his face getting it all sloppy and Corky doesn’t even care cause he’s just that kind of guy. One look at his baseball career and you can tell he’s spent A LOT of years in the minors (mostly in the Reds organization) and will be playing only his 200th Major League game tonight (he was called up Monday after Ryan Hanigan was placed on the 15 day DL).

Despite playing only 200 games in 16 seasons of professional baseball, he is a favorite of Reds fans and even had a bobble head night at Triple A Louisville last season.

Still, his Major League career achievements are impressive. He has a two-homer game as well as a home run against the great Greg Maddux. He also STOLE HOME once. He’s a big dude and a catcher to boot, not many of those type of guys steal home.

During all that time in the minors he’s also had a bunch of other side jobs to support his family, including laying concrete (man’s job), laying floors (man’s job) and construction (ultimate man’s job).

So, if you’re looking for someone to root for in tonight’s games and for the next 15 days while Hanigan is on the DL, just look for that big old ‘stache behind the plate for the Redlegs.
