Lopez to rest bruised pitching hand for few days

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- Javier Lopez's bruised left hand proved that there's nothing wrong with Madison Bumgarner's stuff.

Contrary to earlier reports, Lopez said Wednesday that he was hit squarely on the back of his pitching hand by a toss from Bumgarner as they played catch Tuesday morning in the right-field area at Scottsdale Stadium. It had been reported that a ball short-hopped Lopez before it struck him.

Lopez settled into a catcher's crouch to enable Bumgarner to throw a couple of simulated pitches. The last one moved a little too much for Lopez to handle.

"He threw some pretty nasty offspeed stuff," said Lopez, whose hand bore the imprint of the baseball's seam. "It was a split-change-cutter combo. It did a little bit of everything."

Lopez, who was on Puerto Rico's provisional roster for the World Baseball Classic, already had decided to skip the event. The decision was even easier in hindsight.

"Now this gives me more reason to sit here and get this better," said Lopez, who probably will rest for three or four days, according to Giants manager Bruce Bochy.
