Mariners add five players to roster as September call-ups

RHP Erasmo Ramirez, LHP James Paxton, RHP Chance Ruffin, RHP Hector Noesi and INF Carlos Triunfel join team today.

Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager Jack Zduriencik announced today the following roster moves:

  • RHP Erasmo Ramirez recalled from AAA Tacoma (starting tonight)
  • LHP James Paxton selected from AAA Tacoma
  • RHP Chance Ruffin recalled from AAA Tacoma
  • RHP Hector Noesi recalled from AAA Tacoma
  • INF Carlos Triunfel recalled from AAA Tacoma
  • Coach Howard Johnson added to staff for September (AAA hitting coach)

Ramirez (#50) will be the starting pitcher in tonight's game against the Kansas City Royals (7:10 pm CT/5:10 pm PT). Paxton (#65), Ruffin (#57), Noesi (#45) and Triunfel (#1) will also be in uniform for tonight's game. Johnson (#10) was the Tacoma Rainiers hitting coach and will join the staff for the month of September.

Ramirez, 23, earned the win in his last start Aug. 29 at Houston (5.2 IP, 5 H, 2 R/ER, 2 BB, 7 SO) to improve to 5-1 on the season. He was optioned to AAA Tacoma following the start, but remained with the team. In 9 appearances/8 starts, Ramirez is 5-1 with a 5.18 ERA (28 ER, 48.2 IP).

Paxton, 24, will be making his Major League debut with his first appearance. The left-hander went 8-11 with a 4.45 ERA (72 ER, 145.2 IP) in 28 appearances/26 starts. He struck out 131 batters and averaged 8.09 strikeouts per 9.0 innings. Paxton held left-handed batters to a .222 (30x135) batting average and did not allow a home run. Paxton was selected by Seattle in the 4th round of the 2010 June Draft after pitching collegiately at the University of Kentucky.

Ruffin, 24, returns to the Major Leagues for the first time since 2011. The right-hander split the minor league season between AA Jackson and AAA Tacoma, combining to go 5-6 with a 3.91 ERA (49 ER, 112.2 IP) in 31 appearances, 18 starts. In 13 relief appearances with the Rainiers he posted a 1.74 ERA (4 ER, 20.2 IP) while striking out 19 and walking only 3 batters.

Noesi, 26, will be in his fourth stint with the Mariners this season (4/18-5/17 & 5/27-6/5, 7/12-26, 9/3-current). In 9 appearances with the Mariners he is 0-1 with a 5.64 ERA (14 ER, 22.1 IP). In his most recent stint with Tacoma he went 1-2, 4.62 ERA (19 ER, 37.0 IP) in 7 starts. Overall with the Rainiers he went 3-3, 5.83 ERA in 15 games, 11 starts. Noesi was acquired by Seattle from the New York Yankees on Jan. 23, 2012.

Triunfel, 23, appeared in 9 games with the Mariners over two stints before the All-Star break (.083/2x24, RBI). In 100 games with the Rainiers he hit .282 (108x383) with 55 runs scored, 22 doubles, 3 triples, 5 home runs and 31 RBI. Triunfel ended the AAA season with hits in 8 of the last 10 games (.282/11x39). Triunfel was originally signed by the Mariners as a non-drafted free agent on Sept. 23, 2006. He made his MLB debut Sept. 7, 2012 vs. Oakland.

Johnson, 52, just completed his first season as a coach in the Mariners organization serving as the hitting coach for the Tacoma Rainiers. Under his tutelage the Rainiers finished 2nd in the Pacific Coast League with 146 home runs, including at least one homer by 26 different players. Johnson also served as a coach for the USA team in the annual Futures Game. Johnson enjoyed a 14-season Major League career with the Tigers, Mets, Rockies and Cubs, and was a two-time All-Star.

The Mariners active roster currently includes 32 players. With the addition of Paxton to the 40-man roster, the Mariners 40-man roster is now full at 40 players, with RHP Stephen Pryor on the 60-day disabled list and DH/1B Jesus Montero on the restricted list.
