MLB to test expanded replay at Classic

Major League Baseball will use second-round Pool 2 games at Marlins Park in Miami to look at potential options for greatly expanded instant replay.

ESPN.com first reported the story, and it was confirmed by a high-ranking MLB official.

A group of officials will take notes on matters such as which camera angles are used, how long it takes to make a clear decision on close plays and compare that to the estimated time it would take to review calls under various options that are being considered.

ESPN.com noted that instant replay of fair-or-foul and catch-or-trap situations are part of the new Basic Agreement and that this is an indication that MLB is now considering dramatically expanding use of the technology. The changes are expected to be put in place for the 2014 season.

Still to be determined: Whether managers will be allowed to challenge decisions or whether that will be handled by a designated umpire, whether there would be a replay umpire on site for every game or whether the reviews would all be made from a central location and exactly which calls could potentially be reversed.
