MLB.com-sponsored Stefani fifth in Houston Open

Golfer enjoys career-best showing in PGA career

MLB.com-sponsored golfer Shawn Stefani finished fifth in the Shell Houston Open on Sunday.

Stefani, who has the website's logo on his golf bag, shot 10 under par, five shots back of winner Matt Jones at the Golf Club of Houston in Humble, Texas. The 32-year-old posted scores of 67, 69, 73 and 69 through four rounds, totaling 278 strokes. Stefani also finished five back of Matt Kuchar, who lost in a playoff to Jones.

The PGA event was the second for Stefani in 2014. Last year, he played in 21 events, earning two top 10 finishes and ranking 135th in the standings with 333 points.

This was the best result of Stefani's career, spanning 25 PGA Tour starts, in logging 110 FedExCup points and a $256,000 prize that was his first payday in two starts this season. By clearing $171,916 and 74 FedExCup points, he clears his objective and will play out of the Major Medical category for the rest of the season. Stefani has been limited to only two tournaments this season because of a neck injury.
