MLBFC Debate: Cano or Pedroia

Who would you rather have for the next decade: Robinson Cano or Dustin Pedroia?

Cano, 30, has two Gold Gloves and four Silver Sluggers and is a five-time All-Star. The Yankees star is approaching free agency and is reportedly seeking a record-setting contract for a 2B.

Pedroia, 29, was the 2008 MVP, has two Gold Gloves and a Silver Slugger and is a four-time All-Star. The Red Sox locked him up to a long-term contract today.

Contracts aside, who is the better player?

Offense

While Cano has more home run power, averaging 24 home runs per 162 games to Pedroia’s 16, Pedroia hits for extra bases more consistently and doubles Cano’s stolen base totals. Pedroia also has a better eye, averaging 68 walks and just 64 strikeouts per 162 games. By comparison, Cano averages 81 strikeouts per 162 games and has an inferior walk rate. They each maintain a .300 average and an OBP over .355.

Defense

In 949 games, Pedroia has made only 38 errors, good for a .991 fielding percentage. In 1,293 games, Cano has 86 errors, giving him a .986 percentage. More advanced fielding metrics consistently grade Pedroia as one of the top five defensive second baseman in the game and are not as kind to Cano.

Overall

With Cano, you can expect incredible power and durability—he hasn't missed more than four games in a season since 2006. With Pedroia, you can expect a high on-base percentage, great glove and 40-plus doubles a year.

You can’t go wrong with either player, but if I had to pick one, I’m going with Dustin Pedroia.
