Carolina clash set up for Super Regionals

Tar Heels move on to face Gamecocks after extra-innings win

The NCAA Tournament Super Regionals pairings are set after a dramatic Monday on the diamond.

In the Chapel Hill, N.C., Regional, Cody Stubbs' fourth hit of the night delivered the winning run for North Carolina in a wild 12-11 victory over Florida Atlantic that propelled the Tar Heels to the Super Regional against South Carolina. FAU erased a 6-2 deficit in the ninth with a six-run frame before UNC knotted the score with two runs of its own in the bottom half of the inning. Both teams scored three times in the 12th before Stubbs sliced a line drive down the left-field line with the bases loaded in the 13th.

Top-seeded South Carolina finished off a 6-4 win against third-seeded Liberty on Monday, as the Gamecocks captured the Columbia, S.C., Regional.

South Carolina's Jack Wynkoop scattered six hits and two earned runs over four innings in the win, striking out three and walking one. Designated hitter and cleanup hitter LB Dantzler went 2-for-4 with two RBIs for the Gamecocks.

Liberty outfielder Ryan Cordell went 0-for-4 with a walk in the loss. Liberty had the tying runs on base in the ninth, but left fielder Justin Sizemore struck out to end the game.

The game was delayed 16 hours because of storms that hit in the fifth inning Sunday night with South Carolina leading, 4-2.

The Gamecocks have won 27 consecutive NCAA Tournament games at home and advanced to the best-of-three Super Regional round for the fourth straight season.

Mississippi State captured the Starkville, Miss., Regional with a 6-1 triumph against Central Arkansas. Southpaw Chad Girodo pitched the final 6 2/3 innings for the Bulldogs, as he tallied 12 strikeouts while allowing only one run. Mississippi State advances to face Virginia in the Super Regionals.

Vanderbilt thumped Georgia Tech, 7-1, as Philip Pfeifer and Brian Miller combined to hold the Yellow Jackets to one unearned run on four hits and three walks. The Commodores advance to play Louisville.

Rice, which will square off against North Carolina State in the Super Regionals, knocked off Oregon, the top seed in the Eugene, Ore., Regional, 11-4.

The Super Regionals will feature 14 No. 1 seeds and two No. 2 seeds.
