Overturned call ends Rays' third vs. Blue Jays
TORONTO -- Blue Jays manager John Gibbons was successful in his challenge of a call at first base during the third inning of Tuesday night's game vs. the Rays.
The incident began when Tampa Bay's Yunel Escobar hit what appeared to be a tailor-made double-play ball to Brett Lawrie at second base. Lawrie turned and fired to Jose Reyes, who stepped on second and then made an off-balance throw to first.
First-base umpire Brian O'Nora called Escobar safe, but Gibbons immediately came out to challenge. Replays showed that the ball was in first baseman Adam Lind's glove a half-step before Escobar arrived at the base.
The call was overturned following after the 40-second review.
