Padres top Marlins with five-run 11th inning

MIAMI -- It took a little extra work, but the Padres defeated the Marlins, 8-3, in 11 innings on Friday to win the series opener at Marlins Park and claim their sixth victory in seven games. Marlins closer A.J. Ramos walked Yonder Alonso with the bases loaded to send home the go-ahead run, and San Diego added four in the frame, giving Brandon Maurer the victory.

After a seven-inning, two-run outing by Ian Kennedy -- who was briefly removed as the starter prior to the game, as he'd planned to join his wife for the birth of their daughter -- Padres closer Craig Kimbrel had the Marlins down to their last out protecting a one-run lead. But Derek Dietrich launched a solo homer to send the game into extra innings.

The Padres took a one-run lead into the ninth thanks to an RBI single by Yangervis Solarte in the third inning, followed by an RBI single by Jedd Gyorko and a sacrifice fly from Alexi Amarista in the fourth. Christian Yelich hit a two-run homer for the Marlins in the first inning, but that was it until the ninth. Miami starter David Phelps allowed three earned runs in five innings, and Ramos took the loss as he surrendered four earned runs in 1 1/3 innings.

"[Ramos] had such an efficient 11-pitch [10th] inning, we felt like we could run him out there and get the second one," Marlins manager Dan Jennings said. "It didn't work, and that's not on him. We asked him to do something we haven't been asking him to do."

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
A different table-setter: Kennedy, to be sure, does most of his best work with his right arm. But his leadoff double in the third inning helped set up the Padres' first run of the game, as he later scored from second base on Solarte's base hit. More >

Dietrich in the clutch: With the Marlins down to their last out, Dietrich jumped on Kimbrel's fastball and launched it a projected 377 feet to right field at 100 mph, according to Statcast™. That tied the score at 3 and sent the game to extras. Dietrich's sixth homer of the season was the fourth Kimbrel has surrendered this year, leading to Kimbrel's second blown save in 32 chances.

"That was a huge moment when Dietrich stepped up big with two outs to hit a blast like that," Jennings said. "You feel like the momentum was swinging our way."

Yelich shows off power: In the bottom of the first inning, Yelich hit a two-run homer to straightaway center field -- which is not an easy task at Marlins Park. The shot, Yelich's sixth of the season, traveled a projected 435 feet at 108 mph, according to Statcast™, putting the Marlins ahead, 2-0.

Walk this way: The Padres scored the go-ahead run in the 11th inning thanks in large part to three consecutive walks. Will Venable reached third base with one out and then saw Ramos walk the next three hitters in order. The last was a free pass to Yonder Alonso that allowed Venable to trot in from third with the go-ahead run. More >

"Awesome at-bats," said Gyorko, who hit a two-run single in the 11th.

SEVEN UP
July hasn't been a great month for Padres catcher Derek Norris, though he seemed determined to finish better than he started. He had two infield hits in his first two at-bats against the Marlins, giving him seven consecutive hits going back to Thursday's 5-for-5 game against the Mets.

QUOTABLE
"These guys have been together since Spring Training, and there were some expectations that they felt they had. They're human. They're friends ... and get to know each other's families. When this many guys get moved, it's tough. It definitely affects their mind-set, but at the same time, they know it's the business of baseball, and guys are going to get moved." -- Jennings, on the effect of the Marlins trading four players over the past two days

"I felt good about it. He's the one who called us back and said he wanted to pitch. ... I know he didn't get the win, but that was seven exceptional innings." -- Padres interim manager Pat Murphy on Kennedy, who returned from the airport after his flight was delayed in time to make his start

WHAT'S NEXT
Padres: Odrisamer Despaigne (4-7, 4.76 ERA) gets the start on Saturday in a 4:10 p.m. PT start against the Marlins. Despaigne beat the Marlins in San Diego last week, allowing one run in six innings.

Marlins: Jose Urena (1-4, 4.04 ERA), just called up from Triple-A New Orleans on Friday, gets the call in place of the recently traded Mat Latos. In seven starts this season, Urena has gone at least six innings four times.
