Bickford tests positive for marijuana before Draft

College of Southern Nevada pitcher Phil Bickford, MLB.com's No. 21 Draft prospect, tested positive for marijuana in a pre-Draft drug test, MLB.com's Jim Callis has confirmed. Baseball America was the first to report the news.

Bickford, a 19-year-old right-hander, was the 10th overall pick of the 2013 Draft by the Blue Jays, out of a California high school. He elected not to sign, instead heading to Cal State Fullerton. After his freshman season, Bickford enjoyed a successful summer in the Cape Cod League, then transferred to junior college at Southern Nevada in order to become eligible for the 2015 Draft.

In 16 starts for the Coyotes, Bickford went 9-1 with a 1.45 ERA, striking out 166 batters over 86 2/3 innings. MLB.com's latest mock had him headed to the Tigers with the No. 22 overall pick in the Draft, which begins on Monday at 6 p.m. ET on MLB.com and MLB Network.

Each year, the top 200 Draft prospects, as selected by the Major League Scouting Bureau, are subject to a pre-Draft medical program, which includes a random drug test. Players must take the test in order to be eligible. The positive test is not expected to drastically affect his draft status, but he will be subject to additional testing if he signs with the club that selects him.
