Wolcott named full-time umpire; Darling retires

Quinn Wolcott, 28, has been appointed to the full-time Major League umpiring staff, replacing retiring veteran Gary Darling, MLB announced Friday.

Darling, 56, is retiring after 28 years of service. He was named a crew chief before the 2004 season.

Wolcott has been a professional umpire since 2006 and working at the Triple-A level since 2011. He worked the World Baseball Classic qualifying round in 2012, and his first Major League Spring Training last year. He debuted in the Majors on May 27 last year and has worked 149 games in his career.

Darling has been on the disabled list throughout the 2014 season.
