Lovullo: Sox outfielders need to communicate

BOSTON -- When Rusney Castillo caught a fly ball for the second out on Wednesday night and threw it into the stands, it was the continuation of a troubling trend for the Red Sox.

Mookie Betts and Jackie Bradley Jr. lost track of outs in the outfield earlier this season, and Hanley Ramirez forgot on the bases. This is something Red Sox interim manager Torey Lovullo takes seriously, and he knows the club needs to clean it up in short order.

"It is unfortunate that we've had a couple of hiccups and they're documented, and we know who they are and what's happened," Lovullo said. "I wasn't too thrilled about it. I had a chance to talk to Rusney, so we've taken care of it and we've sat down with all of our outfielders."

Lovullo said that Bradley Jr. starting on Thursday against the Royals instead of Castillo had nothing to do with the mistake.

Instead of singling out individuals for mental errors, Lovullo said the Red Sox need to communicate better as a team.

"That's a team of three guys out there [in the outfield] every night," Lovullo said. "They're all held responsible. So we've addressed that, talked to Rusney and hopefully we're going to move off of that as quickly as possible. It's not something that we're about here in Boston."
