Report: Free-agent catcher Jose Molina needs knee surgery

Veteran catcher Jose Molina, a free agent, reportedly needs knee surgery that will keep him off the field for a while. reported on Friday that Molina will undergo surgery and quoted the 39-year-old catcher as saying he will be out a "long, indefinite period."

Molina, who will turn 40 in June, hit just .178/.230/.187 with only two extra-base hits and 10 RBIs in 80 games for the Rays last year. He sat out a few games in late August due to a sore left knee.

After signing Molina to a two-year deal in December 2013, Tampa Bay released Molina in November. 

The younger brother of former big league catcher Bengie Molina and the older brother of Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina, Jose is highly regarded for his pitch-framing and game-calling skills behind the plate. He is a career .233 hitter with 39 home runs and 223 RBIs in 947 games over parts of 15 seasons in the Majors.
