Stats of the Day: Holt's bolt secures cycle

Here are four interesting items from around the big leagues on Tuesday:

• Batting leadoff and playing second base, Brock Holt constructed the 21st cycle in Red Sox history; he doubled in the first, singled in the fifth, homered in the seventh and tripled in the eighth. Holt is the first Red Sox player to hit for the cycle since John Valentin on June 6, 1996. He is the first one to do it from the leadoff spot since Leon Culberson in 1943, and the first second sacker to cycle for the Sox since Bobby Doerr had his second on May 13, 1947.

• An Orioles-record eight homers were hit in Baltimore's 19-3 victory over Philadelphia. The Orioles barrage began with their first batter of the game, Manny Machado. Machado added a second home run in the second, giving him a pair of multihomer games out of the leadoff spot this season. Dating back to 1914, Machado is the fifth player to be younger than 23 and have multiple multihomer games out of the leadoff spot in a season. Joe Morgan did this in 1965 and Bobby Bonds followed in '68. • Bryce Harper hit his 22nd round-tripper of the year while adding a double and a single and a walk to his increasingly extraordinary line. Harper now owns a 1.216 OPS. The highest OPS for any player in an age-22 or younger season at the All-Star break (minimum 250 plate appearances) is owned by Ted Williams, who -- on his way to hitting .406 in 1941 -- entered the break with a 1.204 mark.Video: Must C Crushed: Harper hits one past ray tank

• Albert Pujols hit a two-run homer in the sixth inning to turn a 1-0 deficit into a lead as the Angels went on to defeat Arizona, 4-1. Pujols has 47 career go-ahead homers that have come in the sixth inning or later. Those 47 tie him with Jim Thome and Vladimir Guerrero for the 10th most since 1973. Eddie Murray had 61 for the most, and Alex Rodriguez has 60. Milestone watch for Wednesday

• With one more home run, Giancarlo Stanton will tie Gary Sheffield (25 in 1996) for the second most home runs hit by a Marlins player by the All-Star break.

• Freddie Freeman has 98 home runs, 399 RBIs and 299 walks. The only Braves players in franchise history to have 100 homers, 400 RBIs and 300 walks through their first six seasons are Eddie Mathews, David Justice and Chipper Jones.
