Stats of the Day: Good things come in 3's for JD

Here are four interesting items from around the big leagues this weekend:

• In Sunday's win against the Yankees, J.D. Martinez fell a grand slam shy of the home run cycle, hitting a two-run homer in the first, a solo shot in the fifth, and a three-run home run in the sixth. Martinez is the 23rd Tigers player to homer three times in a game, and the first since Miguel Cabrera on May 19, 2013. He is the third to do it against the Yankees, joining Pat Mullin (1949) and Charlie Maxwell (1959).

• On Friday, Chris Sale fanned 14, walked none, and allowed just two hits in eight scoreless innings. Sale's line gave him six straight games with 10 or more strikeouts, and five in a row with at least a dozen K's. Sale became the second different left-hander since 1914 to have a streak of six straight games with double-digit strikeouts. • On Friday night at Yankee Stadium, Alex Rodriguez homered in the first inning to become the 29th player to reach 3,000 hits. The home run gave Rodriguez 667 in his career. In addition to being one of 29 players to have 3,000 hits, he is one of three players -- along with Hank Aaron and Willie Mays -- to have 3,000 hits and 600 homers.Video: DET@NYY: A-Rod blasts a solo homer for hit No. 3,000

• After setting down the first 26 batters he faced on Saturday, Max Scherzer's bid for the 24th perfect game in history ended with a hit-by-pitch. Scherzer then retired Josh Harrison to throw the second no-hitter in the Majors this season. Scherzer is the 13th pitcher on record to lose his perfect game bid with two outs in the ninth. After seeing only one such instance between 1991 and 2009, there have been four occurrences since 2010. Among the previous dozen, one -- Hooks Wiltse's effort in 1908 -- also saw the bid end with a hit by pitch. Milestone watch for Monday

• Felix Hernandez needs eight strikeouts to match Tim Wakefield for 22nd most in American League history.

• Cabrera stands at 3,994 total bases. There have been 86 players in history to reach 4,000 in a career, but only five ever to get there by the end of their age-32 season. Cabrera would join Alex Rodriguez, Jimmie Foxx, Hank Aaron, Albert Pujols and Mel Ott.
