Frazier's 10th-inning shot lifts Reds over Giants
SAN FRANCISCO -- Todd Frazier's leadoff home run snapped a 10th-inning tie Tuesday night and lifted the Cincinnati Reds to a 9-8 triumph over the San Francisco Giants, whose four-game winning streak dissolved.
Frazier's big hit ended a sequence of manic swings in momentum. Cincinnati appeared to take control with a five-run seventh inning, tallying all of its runs in that frame with two outs. Jay Bruce and Brandon Phillips contributed RBI singles, Ivan De Jesus Jr. drew a bases-loaded walk and pinch-hitter Ramon Cabrera lined a two-run single to account for the scoring.
"I was more emotional because I made that throwing error [in the ninth] that was costly. Whenever you pick yourself up, I think you're going to be more emotional," Frazier said. "To get a big hit like that was very exciting."

The Giants trailed, 8-5, when ace left-hander Madison Bumgarner provided the evening's highlight with an eighth-inning pinch-hit appearance against Reds closer Aroldis Chapman. Bumgarner drew a walk after falling behind on the count, helping the Giants score a run. That seemed to energize San Francisco, which forced extra innings by scoring twice in the ninth.

"He worked a great at-bat," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. "He kept that rally going. I've used him a couple of times in that situation and I knew he'd give us some good swings, and he did."

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
De Jesus comes through: One run was already in for Cincinnati against Chris Heston in the first inning when De Jesus drove a two-run triple to the deepest part of the ballpark in right field. Joey Votto and Phillips scored for a 3-0 lead. In the wild top of the seventh against Hunter Strickland, De Jesus fouled off three straight fastballs before drawing the bases-loaded walk for the go-ahead run.

Close doesn't count: Twice, the Giants were one strike away from escaping the seventh inning no worse than tied. But Strickland yielded Phillips' RBI single on an 0-2 pitch, then hit Frazier with a 2-2 delivery.

"The seventh inning killed us," Bochy said. "A couple errors, walks, a hit batsman, you're asking for trouble then. That inning got us. We just couldn't get the last out there."
Cabrera collecting hits: Cabrera's two-run single as a pinch-hitter in the seventh gave the September callup hits in each of his last five at-bats (4-for-4 on Monday). He has seven hits over his last 10 at-bats.

"I feel pretty happy," Cabrera said. "I'm always going to be ready, anytime they need me. I'll be ready for any situation. I just tried to look for a good pitch to hit the ball and try to bring some runs to the plate. It was a pretty important at-bat for the game."

Bumgarner got behind 0-2 against Chapman before drawing a seven-pitch walk. Prior to Bumgarner's free pass, Chapman had struck out 41 of the 57 batters to fall behind 0-2 in the count against him this season, with none earning a walk.
REPLAY REVIEW
The Giants got the best of an eventful seventh-inning sequence. After Skip Schumaker drew a one-out walk, Jason Bourgeois topped a weak grounder toward third base. Giants reliever Josh Osich pounced on the ball and threw it wildly past first base. The ball caromed off the base of the wall near the visitors' bullpen near the fingers of a spectator reaching for it -- which meant possible fan interference. Meanwhile, Schumaker raced home and was called safe.
This prompted two reviews. The review of the fan-interference call the Reds requested brought about no change; it was decided the call on the field stands. As for the play at the plate, the ruling on the field was overturned and Schumaker was called out because, as he slid, his elevated right foot didn't touch home plate before Buster Posey tagged him.

"[Umpire Paul Emmel] said, 'Yeah, it was conclusive that there was no fan interference,'" Reds manager Bryan Price said. "Of course, then we see there was fan interference, which we weren't able to see on the big screen. It made not a great feeling in our dugout because it felt like it was no doubt that the fan interfered with the ball. It should have been runners on second and third as opposed to Schumaker being out at the plate."
WHAT'S NEXT
Reds: In what could be his final start of the season, Michael Lorenzen will pitch for the Reds in Wednesday's 10:15 p.m. ET series finale. Lorenzen, who had 148 2/3 innings this season in the big leagues and Triple-A Louisville, has a season limit of roughly 150-155 innings. He allowed two runs and a career-high 10 hits over five innings Friday for a 4-2 win over the Cardinals.
Giants: Jake Peavy will strive to maintain a couple of trends in Wednesday's 7:15 p.m. PT series finale at AT&T Park. He's 4-2 with a 3.46 ERA in seven home starts, compared with 2-4, 4.80 on the road, and has won six of his last eight decisions overall, including two in a row.
