Tropicana Field Gong

Wrigley Field has Ronnie Woo Woo, Progressive Field has John Adams and now Tropicana Field has…this guy.

Unlike the first two, the new Rays personality isn’t actually a fan – he’s on the team’s payroll, thanks to manager Joe Maddon.

The story goes that Maddon became enamored with the song “Bang A Gong (Get It On)” by T-Rex during Spring Training, which led to him not only making it the song that blares as the team takes the field at home games, but he also had a gong installed at the Trop to fire up fans.

We’ve got a gong here at the MLB Fan Cave (made famous by Eric Byrnes) that we hit before going down the home run slide, so we’re super pumped about the newest addition at the Trop.

The purpose of the Rays’ gong has yet to be solidified beyond when the team runs out to take the field in the top of the first inning.

What should elicit a bang of the gong? A home run? Strikeout? Tweet your thoughts to @MLBFanCave using the hashtag #MLBFC.
