Correia satisfied after first spring outing

SARASOTA, Fla. -- Right-hander Kevin Correia came away pleased with his Grapefruit League debut against the Orioles on Saturday at Ed Smith Stadium.

Correia, who signed a two-year deal worth $10 million to join the Twins this offseason, gave up one run on two hits and a walk over two innings. He threw 36 pitches, including only 10 in a 1-2-3 first inning against Brian Roberts, Nate McLouth and Nick Markakis.

"It was good," Correia said. "I got out there and got my feet wet in a real game. ... I was around the plate, for the most part. I threw every pitch I have, so I got around to it. I had a quick first inning, but I had a little more opportunity in the second inning to throw more pitches."

Correia gave up two hits -- a double to Matt Wieters down the right-field line and an infield single to Chris Davis -- before giving up a run on a sacrifice fly to J.J. Hardy in the second inning.

The veteran righty said he was happy he was able to get through the second inning without having to come out early. But at the same time, he's not that worried about the results in Spring Training.

"It's always nice to do well," Correia said. "Even when you throw a bullpen on a side day, you want to do well. But it wouldn't have concerned me if I went out there and pitched bad today. I've had enough Spring Trainings to have good Spring Trainings, bad ones and mediocre ones -- and it doesn't have much bearing on the season."

Correia is set to start again on Wednesday against the Phillies before flying out that night to return to San Diego to attend the birth of his third child with his wife Diana. He'll then come back to Fort Myers on March 3, and will throw a bullpen before making another start.

"I'll start a game in a couple days and then leave for three days and come right back," Correia said. "So that's the plan. Just progress every time and build up the pitch count. That's the main goal."
