Vargas, Ortiz, Rosario combine for nine hits, seven RBIs in playoff romp

Puerto Rican Winter League

Mayaguez 14, Carolina 7
Kennys Vargas fell a triple shy of the cycle, drove in four runs and scored twice as the Indios remained atop the round-round playoff standings. Fellow Twins prospects Daniel Ortiz had two RBIs and scored three times and Eddie Rosario went 2-for-4 with an RBI for Mayaguez, which got three RBIs from Dodgers prospect Yasiel Puig. Dodgers farmhand Osvaldo Martinez singled twice and drove in a pair of runs for the Gigantes, who fell to 3-7. Box score

Caguas 6, Santurce 5
Former Minor Leaguer Carlos Rivera went 3-for-3 with a two-run homer, falling a triple shy of the cycle and scoring three times, as the Criollos held off the Cangrejeros. Red Sox prospect Henry Ramos and Minor League veteran Jaime Ortiz both added two hits and an RBI for Caguas, while Sergio Miranda was 3-for-4 and drove in a pair of runs in a losing effort. Magallanes 4, Zulia 3
World Series MVP Pablo Sandoval homered, then singled in the tying run as the Navegantes rallied past the Aguilas to stay on top of the round-robin playoff standings. Eliezer Alfonzo delivered a go-ahead RBI double in Magallanes' three-run sixth inning and Gustavo Chacin struck out six over 6 1/3 frames for the win. Reds prospect Henry Rodriguez and Alex Romero smacked solo homers for Zulia. Box score

Lara 11, Caribes 3
Former Major Leaguer Robert Perez homered twice and drove in four runs to power the Cardenales to their first win in six playoff road games. Dodgers farmhand C.J. Retherford contributed two hits and three RBIs for Lara, while Braves Minor Leaguer Yohan Flande yielded two runs -- one earned -- on five hits over 6 1/3 innings. Padres infielder Alexi Amarista was 2-for-4 with a run scored for the Caribes. Box score

Culiacan 6, Obregon 4
Former Major Leaguer Karim Garcia hit a three-run walk-off homer in the ninth inning as the Tomateros squared their best-of-7 semifinal series at 1-1. Braves newcomer Ramiro Peña and Yankees prospect Ronnier Mustelier also went yard for Culiacan, while Agustin Murillo went 3-for-5 with a solo shot and two runs scored for the Yaquis. Mexicali 4, Guasave 3
Former Indians farmhand Roman Peña singled home the go-ahead run in the top of the ninth inning, giving the Aguilas a split of the first two games of their semifinal series. Major League veteran Geronimo Gil doubled twice, drove in a run and scored once for Mexicali, while former Southern League All-Star Jesus Cota went 3-for-4 with a two-run homer for the Algodoñeros. Escogido 6, Estrellas 1
Mets utility man Jordany Valdespin doubled, singled and drove in two runs remained tied for first place in the round-robin playoffs. Mauro Gomez (Red Sox) drilled a two-run homer and former Minor Leaguer Edward Valdez allowed a run on seven hits over 5 1/3 innings for Escogido. Angels farmhand Luis Jimenez had two hits and drove in the Estrellas' lone run. Box score

Rangers prospect Leury Garcia hit a walk-off single to cap a three-run ninth inning as the Aguilas retained a share of first place in the round-robin playoffs. Former Marlins Minor Leaguer Juan Carlos Perez had two hits, including a solo homer, for Cibaeñas, while Major League veteran Guillermo Rodriguez broke out of a 1-for-12 slump with a two-run double for the Toros.
