Valverde, Tribe prospect Rodriguez suspended

Free-agent veteran, outfielder receive 80-game punishment for positive test

Jose Valverde, a 12-year Major League veteran and current free agent, was suspended Friday for violating the Minor League Drug Prevention and Treatment Program.

Valverde received an 80-game suspension for testing positive for a metabolite of Stanozolol. His suspension will begin when he signs with another Major League organization.

The 37-year-old last appeared in 21 games for the Mets in 2014. He posted a 3.27 ERA with 288 saves in 626 career games with the D-backs, Astros, Tigers and Mets.

Indians Minor League outfielder Luigi Rodriguez also received an 80-game suspension following a positive test for a metabolite of Stanozolol. Rodriguez was playing for Class A Advanced Lynchburg.
