SUMMARY: Only 21 and making his Triple-A debut, led the Las Vegas staff with 10 wins and 3 complete games, tied for 5th in the Pacific Coast League...ranked 4th among Padres minor leaguers in victories...finished 10-11 with a 5.13 ERA in 26 starts...allowed only 13 homers in 135.0 innings after giving up 24 in 1999...got off to a great start, going 5-2 with a 3.09 ERA (12 ER/35.0 IP) in his first 7 starts through May 15...won his April 9 Triple-A debut at Calgary, allowing a run on 4 hits over 5.0 innings...after allowing 6 runs without recording an out in his next start, April 18 vs. Salt Lake, rebounded to throw 6.0 innings of one-hit, one-run ball to beat Fresno in game one of an April 23 doubleheader, then posted consecutive 6.0-inning shutout efforts in wins April 29 vs. Calgary and May 4 vs. Tucson, part of a 5-game span in which he was 4-1 with a 1.50 ERA (5 ER/30.0 IP)...beginning May 20, was 5-9 with a 5.85 ERA (65 ER/100.0 IP) over his final 19 starts...was recognized by Baseball America as San Diego's No. 5 prospect and best control pitcher entering the 2000 campaign.
