Claimed off waivers from the Astros on Sept. 9 -- after the Triple-A Norfolk season had ended, Self never was brought to the Major League Mets, which is not to say he didn't have an impact on the Mets in 2005. He hit the foul tip that struck Mike Piazza in the left hand -- a Self-inflicted injury it was -- and caused the Mets catcher to miss three games in early June. Self, a 26-year-old first baseman/outfielder, had played 545 Minor League games before reaching the big leagues this season. He may turn out to be a Triple-A roster filler next season.
