Full name is JOSEPH A. MARTINEZ...Married, Casey...Graduated from Seton Hall (NJ) Prep in 2001...Was named to New Jersey All-State team twice...Graduated from Boston (MA) College...His father, Javier, left Cuba in 1961...Worked for three off-seasons (2006, 2007 and 2008) as a substitute teacher at Columbia High School in South Orange, where his mother works...Was inducted into Seton Hall Prep Athletic Hall of Fame in 2007...He played 4 years of varsity football, 3 years of baseball and 2 of basketball... Father, Javier, emigrated from Cuba in 1961... Brother Javier, who plays in the Mariners organization, graduated from Fordham University and was drafted in 2007...Was Giants' 2009 nominee for the Hutch Award, given annually to Major League Baseball player who best exemplifies honor, courage and dedication of baseball great Fred Hutchinson, both on and off field.
2012
Went 10-11 with a 5.39 ERA (93 ER in 155.1 IP) with 1 complete game in 27 starts with Triple-A Reno....Recalled from Reno on April 24 and made 1 relief appearance with Arizona on April 25 vs. Phillies (1 ER in 1.0 IP)...Optioned back to Reno on April 30....Won 7 straight starts from May 19-June 20 with a 3.68 ERA (18 ER in 44.0 IP)...Was 0-6 with a 7.24 ERA (37 ER in 46.0 IP) over his final 9 starts...Went 1-0 with a 1.93 ERA (3 ER in 14.0 IP) in 2 postseason starts, including the win in Game 3 of Pacific Coast League Championship Series.
2011
Spent the entire season with Triple-A Columbus, going 8-9 with a 4.04 ERA (53 ER in 118.0 IP) in 35 games (16 starts)...was acquired by the Indians from the Pirates on Jan. 4 in exchange for cash considerations...Earned the victory in the Triple-A Championship Game, allowing three runs over 7.0 innings pitched vs. Omaha, garnering Most Valuable Player honors...went 3-0 with a 2.45 ERA (6 ER in 22.0 IP) and 20 strikeouts in 3 postseason starts...Was 4-2 with a 2.84 ERA (10 ER in 31.2 IP) in 19 games as a reliever and 4-7 with a 4.48 ERA (43 ER in 86.1 IP) in 16 starts.
2010
Martinez split the 2010 season between the Triple-A and Major League levels in the Pittsburgh Pirates and San Francisco Giants organizations. Combined at the Big League level he was 0-1 w/a 4.12 ERA in 9 games/1GS (19.2IP, 26H, 9ER, 9BB, 9K)...He was acquired by Pittsburgh at the trading deadline in exchange for LHP Javier Lopez and recorded an ERA of 3.12 (8.2IP, 11H, 3ER) in 5 relief appearances for the Pirates...He went a combined 6-5 w/a 3.94 ERA in 21 games/17GS (109.2IP, 124H, 48ER, 83K) at the Triple-A level between Fresno (SFG) and Indianapolis (PIT)...Began season with Triple-A Fresno (Giants' AAA)...Made 13 of his 14 appearances as a starter with the Grizzlies, where he went 3-1 with a 1.98 ERA (36.1IP/8ER) in six starts on the road and 2-2 with a 4.40 ERA (45.0IP/22ER) in eight games (seven starts) at home...Tossed second career complete game (9.0IP/9H/1ER) while earning the win on 6/4 at Las Vegas...Was recalled by San Francisco on June 11...Started and suffered the loss (6.1IP/4ER) in season debut with Giants on June 15 vs. Baltimore...Was optioned back to Fresno on June 26...Was recalled by San Francisco on July 9...Made one appearance in relief before being optioned back to Fresno on July 19...Did not make an appearance with the Grizzlies before being recalled a third and final time on July 24...Was acquired by Pittsburgh on July 31 and assigned to Triple-A Indianapolis...Tossed 3.0 scoreless innings while making debut with Indianapolis and picked up first professional save on August 3 at Norfolk...Made one more relief appearance before moving into the starting rotation...Recalled by Pittsburgh on September 5...Made first appearance with Pirates that day vs. Washington and gave up two runs (zero earned) in 3.0 innings of work.
2009
added to San Francisco's 40-man roster over winter, Martinez entered his 1st big league camp and had excellent spring where he was named winner of Harry S. Jordan Award, given annually in recognition of player whose performance and dedication in spring training best exemplifies San Francisco Giants spirit...made San Francisco's Opening Day roster for 1st time in his career, however missed nearly 3 months of season after getting struck in head by batted ball...was 1 of just 2 rookies on San Francisco's OD roster, joining IF Travis Ishikawa...overall, went 3-2 with 7.50 ERA (25er, 30.0ip) in 9 games (5 starts) for Giants...made his major league debut Opening Day on April 7 vs. Milwaukee...replaced Tim Lincecum, who allowed 3 runs in just 3.0 innings, and proceeded to log 2.0 frames while allowing 2 runs on 3 hits...Giants scored 2 runs in bottom of 4th inning to take 5-4 lead and Martinez was credited with his 1st-ever major league victory after SF earned 10-6 win...became 1st Giants player to earn win in his big league debut since RHP David Aardsma April 6, 2006 at Houston...had one of scariest moments of his professional career in just his 2nd big league game on April 9 vs. Milwaukee...summoned with 6-run lead in 9th inning, Martinez retired his 1st 2 batters faced before Mike Cameron lined 2-1 pitch that struck him on right side of his head where he suffered concussion and 3 small hairline fractures...as ball ricocheted foul, Martinez fell to ground and tried to rise, however after staggering few steps, he sat down...was able to walk off field and was taken to St. Francis Memorial Hospital, where he was in stable and alert condition and made full recovery...was placed on 15-day disabled list April 10, but was then transferred to 60-day DL May 21...went on long rehab assignment to triple-A, single-A and rookie-level, combining for 0-1 record with 3.35 ERA (14er, 37.2ip) in 8 starts...made 5 starts at triple-A Fresno after being transferred there July 1 and hurt his arm towards end of his 1st rehab assignment so he started 2nd rehab stint with Grizzlies on July 19...returned from his rehab assignments and was reinstated from 60-day DL Aug. 5 where he started that afternoon in Houston...earned 1st victory as starter, logging 5.0 innings and allowing 3 runs on 7 hits in SF's 10-6 win...received his 1st career big league loss Aug. 11 vs. Los Angeles-NL, allowing 4 runs (3er) on 7 hits in Giants' 9-1 defeat...allowed 14 runs (13er) in 9.1 innings over his final 2 starts before being optioned to triple-A Aug. 28 where he finished Grizzlies' season...was recalled final time Sept. 8 and appeared in just 2 games out of bullpen, allowing 3 runs in 3.2 innings...went 0-2 with 4.89 ERA (19er, 35.0ip) in 7 games (5 starts) for Fresno...posted no record with 2.45 figure (2er, 7.1ip) in 2 starts for single-A San Jose and in 1 appearance for Arizona Giants, logged 2.2 innings while allowing 3 runs...played for Scottsdale Scorpions of Arizona Fall League during winter...
2008
logged one of his finest seasons, going 10-10 with league-best 2.49 ERA (41er, 148.0ip) in 27 starts for double-A Connecticut, his 1st season at double-A level...named to 1st All-Star team, being selected to Eastern League in-season squad...was named EAS Pitcher of Week for week ending June 23, logging 7.0-scoreless innings while allowing 2 hits and 4 strikeouts en route to earning victory at New Hampshire

posted 10-10 record with 4.26 ERA (77er, 162.2ip) in 28 starts for single-A San Jose...recorded league-leading 151 strikeouts against 36 walks...also ranked among California League leaders in games (2nd), hits (4th - 172), strikeouts per 9.0 innings (5th, 8.35) and ERA (7th)...struck out season-high 11 batters twice: May 1 vs. Stockton and July 13 vs. Modesto...14 of his 28 starts were quality outings
