Pitched the entire season at Single-A Rancho Cucamonga, posting a 7-6 record and a 3.70 ERA in 27 starts...walked 90 and fanned 163, 3rd-most in the Cal League...led the Quakes in starts and innings (151.0), and tied for 2nd in wins...ranked 3rd among Padres minor leaguers in strikeouts and 5th in ERA...held opponents to a .216 (118-for-547) average and only 10 homers, including none in his first 7 starts (31.2 IP).
HONOR ROLL:
Was named California League Pitcher of the Week twice...was honored for the week of July 10-16 after tossing 8.0 scoreless innings and fanning 9 in an 8-4 win July 14 vs. High Desert...allowed one hit and 3 walks but did not allow a runner past second base...was recognized again after going 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA, allowing only 4 hits while walking 8 and striking out 18 in 14.2 innings July 31-August 6...threw 7.1 scoreless innings in a no-decision July 31 at Mudville...yielded one hit and 6 walks while fanning 7...went on to strike out 11 in 7.0 innings of 3-hit shutout ball in a 6-4 win vs. Lake Elsinore August 5 to cap a 13-game streak in which Watkins notched a 5-0 record and 2.52 ERA (22 ER/78.2 IP).

Combined with 3 relievers on a one-hit, 5-1 victory May 1 vs. Modesto...allowed a hit and 4 walks while fanning 7 in 6.0 innings but got a no-decision...after going 1-2 with a 5.02 ERA (16 ER/28.2 IP) in May, posted a perfect 4-0 record and 2.62 ERA (20 ER/68.2 IP) in June and July...closed the year by striking out a season-high 12 in 7.0 innings August 31 at San Bernardino.
