Rockies acquire lefty reliever Pazos from Phils

April 26th, 2019

ATLANTA -- The Rockies added to their left-handed bullpen depth by acquiring James Pazos from the Phillies for Minor League INF Hunter Stovall on Friday.

Pazos, who turns 29 on May 5, will report to Triple-A Albuquerque. He was 0-1 with a 6.14 ERA and two saves in seven appearances for Lehigh Valley, the Phillies’ Triple-A affiliate.

Pazos has made 137 Major League appearances with the Yankees (2015-16) and Mariners (2017-18), and is 9-6 with a 3.54 ERA. Pazos has been durable -- 59 appearances in 2017 and 60 in 2018.

Also, Pazos’ Major League numbers point to strike-throwing, with 9.3 strikeouts per nine innings against 3.5 walks per nine. Pazos also has close-to-even splits -- .735 OPS against from right-handed batters, .700 from lefty batters.

But higher-than-normal walks this year cost him opportunities with the Phillies, and the club designated him for assignment Wednesday to select the contract of utility man Sean Rodriguez.

The Rockies’ active roster includes two lefty relievers, Mike Dunn and Harrison Musgrave. Jake McGee, who suffered a left knee sprain after two appearances, and Chris Rusin, who has not pitched in the Majors this season because of an upper-back strain, each appear to be nearing injury rehab assignments.
