Minnesota says goodbye to Metrodome with NFL game
Vikings play final game in downtown dome three years after Twins move to Target Field
The Metrodome, home of the Twins for 28 seasons, hosted its final game Sunday, a 14-13 Minnesota Vikings win against the Detroit Lions.
While the downtown Minneapolis dome may have continued to host the Vikings after the Twins moved to Target Field in 2010, plenty of baseball memories also occurred there since it opened in 1982.
The Twins won the 1987 and '91 World Series in "The Thunderdome."
One of the most famous plays in Metrodome history came in Game 6 of the 1991 World Series. Twins outfielder Kirby Puckett made a leaping catch in front of the Plexiglas wall in left-center field to rob the Braves' Ron Gant of an extra-base hit. That amazing catch helped propel the Twins to their second World Series title in five years.
A true home-field advantage, the Twins had an edge thanks to the Metrodome's loud noise, white roof and quick turf.
The Twins' final home game at the Metrodome took place on Oct. 11, 2009 -- a 4-1 loss to the Yankees.
