TEAMS WITH MANAGERIAL VACANCIES:
Teams listed in order of their most recent update.
Phillies
Previous manager: Rob Thomson (Don Mattingly interim)
What happened: Thomson recorded a .625 winning percentage over parts of five seasons at the helm in Philadelphia. He replaced Joe Girardi as manager during the 2022 season and led the Phillies to the National League pennant that year. They also won the NL East in 2024 and '25. But after a 9-19 start to the 2026 season, Thomson was relieved of his duties and replaced by his bench coach, Mattingly, on an interim basis. But Mattingly wasn't president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski's first choice. He wanted to give the job to Alex Cora, who had been dismissed as the Red Sox's manager a few days before Thomson's ouster. Cora turned down the offer.
The Phillies' play improved immediately under Mattingly as they won 16 of their first 20 games. They ended the year with an 88-74 record, good enough to earn an NL Wild Card spot, but they were defeated by the Braves in their best-of-three NL Wild Card Series.
Latest: Try as Dombrowski might, Cora won't be the Phillies' manager next season either. Cora recently told Dombrowski that he is not interested in managing in 2027, sources told MLB.com. The Phillies could take the interim tag off of Mattingly, who is under contract through 2027 as the bench coach. USA Today's Bob Nightengale reported on Oct. 2 that Mattingly "will be gracefully dismissed, likely in the coming week" and will be offered a chance to stay in the organization in another role. But with Cora no longer an option, signs now point to Mattingly's return as manager. (Oct. 7)
Mariners
Previous manager: Dan Wilson
What happened: Wilson replaced Scott Servais as the Mariners' manager in August 2024. The following year, Seattle won 90 games and came within one win of the franchise's first pennant. The Mariners entered 2026 with lofty expectations but never seemed to get on track. Star players such as Cal Raleigh and Julio Rodríguez underperformed, and the team finished with a 76-86 record. Wilson confirmed after the season's final game that he would not be brought back as manager in 2027.
Latest: President of baseball operations Jerry Dipoto has said he would prefer that Seattle's next manager have prior MLB managerial experience, something Wilson did not have when he stepped into the role. The Mariners' search is underway, and sources said the club was eyeing Torey Lovullo, but he has re-upped on a two-year contract to return to the Diamondbacks.
The most obvious fit -- Guardians manager Stephen Vogt -- is probably the most unlikely on Seattle's wish list, given that he is reportedly under contract for 2027. Trades for managers are not unprecedented, and there have been indications that the Mariners would explore this route for Vogt, who was their bullpen coach in 2023 and was slated to be promoted to bench coach in ‘24 before being hired by Cleveland. TEAMS WITH LEAD BASEBALL OPERATIONS EXECUTIVE VACANCIES:
Athletics
Previous GM: David Forst (Dan Feinstein interim)
What happened: Forst spent nearly three decades in the A's organization. He joined the club as a scout in 2000, was named assistant general manager in 2004 and was promoted to GM following the 2015 season. His run ended on Aug. 7, when he and the club mutually agreed to part ways. Feinstein, the assistant GM, was named interim general manager for the remainder of the 2026 season.
Latest: The next GM will be tasked with leading what will truly be a new era in A's baseball as the franchise will move to Las Vegas in 2028. Some of the names in consideration for the gig include former Nationals GM Mike Rizzo, former Astros GM James Click, Red Sox assistant GM Mike Groopman and A's director of player personnel/assistant GM Billy Owens. The Athletic's Patrick Mooney and Ken Rosenthal reported on Oct. 7 (subscription required) that the A's are expected to make their choice by the end of the week. They also mentioned Phillies president of business operations Sam Fuld and Chicago Cubs assistant general manager Jared Banner as two more candidates, among others, for the vacancy. (Oct. 7)
Angels
Previous GM: Perry Minasian (John Mozeliak interim)
What happened: The Angels never won more than 77 games in any of Minasian's four full seasons as general manager, and he was relieved of his duties on June 26 as the club headed for its 11th consecutive losing season. Mozeliak, who oversaw the Cardinals' 10 playoff berths and 2011 World Series title during his time as their general manager from 2007-25, was introduced as the Angels' interim GM shortly thereafter. The Angels ultimately finished the year with a 62-100 record, marking the first 100-loss season in franchise history.
Latest: The franchise is in a state of full transition after Kroenke Sports Entertainment agreed to buy the Angels from owner Arte Moreno on Sept. 1. However, the sale isn't expected to be final until the first quarter of 2027, so for now, Mozeliak is reporting to both parties. He will remain the Angels' acting GM through December, when his contract expires. What happens after that point is anyone's guess. The club may also have to find a new manager as Kurt Suzuki was hired on a one-year deal last October. For what it's worth, Mozeliak said on Sept. 28 that he would like for Suzuki to return as manager in 2027. (Oct. 7)
Astros
Previous GM: Dana Brown (owner Jim Crane overseeing baseball operations)
What happened: The Astros won the AL West with Brown operating as general manager in 2023 and '24. They won the division again in 2026, but about a month before locking up that title, the club decided to part ways with Brown after four seasons. He was in the last year of his contract. Brown’s responsibilities were given to assistant general managers Charles Cook, Gavin Dickey and Connor Huff as well as senior advisor Jeff Bagwell. Crane oversaw baseball ops.
Latest: There hasn't been much buzz regarding what the Astros are looking for in their next GM. Whomever it is, that person may also have to hire a new manager. Joe Espada has said he would like to return for a fourth season, but his contract expires soon. Crane has said repeatedly that Espada's future would be addressed when the Astros' season is over, so an update could come soon. (Oct. 7)
