The Astros completed a trade with the Blue Jays for Gold Glover Daulton Varsho, the club announced Monday. Houston sent right-hander Spencer Arrighetti to Toronto in the deal.
Varsho gives Houston the outfield help it's been seeking at the Deadline, and he would slot into center field with Brice Matthews on the injured list due to a left knee sprain.

There was plenty of pressure on Varsho coming into this season as a pending free agent. Without much star power in the upcoming class of free-agent hitters, Varsho felt like a sneaky candidate to rise to the top as a truly elite defender with the ability to hit for power. Instead, we’ve seen Varsho struggle at the plate, but the most surprising development of all has been his defense taking a step back to being simply “good,” not game-changing.
That’s still in there, though, and there may be no outfielder in baseball who attacks the wall as aggressively as Varsho. One of his first stops in his new stadium should be familiarizing himself with just how forgiving that padding is. When Varsho has been at his best defensively, like his 2024 Gold Glove win, he is one of the best in baseball with his initial jumps. Varsho makes excellent first reads and his burst in those first few steps is typically excellent, making him every pitcher’s favorite defender over his years in Toronto.
Varsho’s defensive background is fascinating, too, a former catcher with the D-backs who eventually moved out from behind the plate. Each spring and once or twice each season, the Blue Jays had Varsho strap on the mask and catch a bullpen, just to stay sharp in case they needed an emergency catcher at any point.
Offensively, Varsho has truly impressive raw power, but needs to get to that more often. His 2025 season was limited by shoulder and hamstring injuries, but in the 71 games he played, he launched 20 home runs. It was easy to dream about his defense and a 30-plus homer season catapulting him to the top of the free-agent market, but in ‘26, he’s struggled with just seven home runs and a .682 OPS. Speed and defense alone make Varsho a useful piece on a contender, but it’s up to his bat to determine just how high that ceiling will be.
