Souza Jr., Astros agree to Minors deal

February 1st, 2021

The Astros signed free-agent outfielder to a Minor League deal with an invite to Spring Training on Monday.

The 31-year-old Souza hit .148 over 27 at-bats in 11 games for the Cubs last season, returning to action after missing all of 2019 while recovering from surgery to repair an ACL tear, LCL tear, partial PCL tear and posterior lateral capsule tear in his left knee.

The right-handed hitter has compiled a .232 average with 71 home runs, 203 RBIs and a .737 OPS over six seasons in the Majors with the Nationals, Rays, D-backs and Cubs. Souza hit a career-high 30 home runs for Tampa Bay in 2017 but has played in just 83 games over the past three seasons.

With George Springer now a member of the Blue Jays and Josh Reddick a free agent, the opportunity could be there for Souza to earn regular playing time with Houston.
