NEW YORK -- Astros left fielder Yordan Alvarez and shortstop Jeremy Peña both left Wednesday afternoon’s 2-0 win over the Mets at Citi Field following a nasty collision in left field in the eighth inning, and they were being evaluated for concussions, a team spokesman said.

“They’re getting further evaluation on a number of things,” Astros manager Dusty Baker said. “Just don’t want to jump to conclusions yet. It looked bad. Anybody that’s played out there has had a collision.”

Alvarez was carted off the field after he collided with Peña on a Dominic Smith fly ball to shallow left field. Peña, who caught the fly ball for the first out of the inning, appeared to strike Alvarez in the face with his left arm as the left fielder sprinted in to try to make a play on the ball.

Both players fell to the ground, where Alvarez remained for several moments while being tended to by Baker and the Astros' training staff. He eventually rose to his feet, but the medical cart was called for to take Alvarez off the field. Peña also exited the game after the collision, leaving under his own power.

Both Alvarez and Peña were in the visitors' clubhouse postgame and were going to fly home with the team to Houston. They were not allowed to talk to the media about the injuries, per the team’s medical staff. Baker said they both wanted to stay in the game.

“Peña said he was OK, of course,” Baker said. “Yordan wanted to stay in the game, but Yordan is not a guy you pick to run into. And neither is Peña. Both of them are well built, but they’re built differently. But strong.”

Alvarez is in the midst of a dominant season at the plate, slashing .316/.412/.658 with 23 homers and 56 RBIs. Peña is hitting .275 with nine homers and 27 RBIs during his rookie season.
