Travis to miss the start of the season

Leiter out for year after Tommy John; Adam acquired from Royals

March 17th, 2019

DUNEDIN, Fla. -- Devon Travis has experienced yet another setback after it was revealed on Sunday morning that he underwent surgery Wednesday to repair a small meniscus tear in his left knee.

According to the Blue Jays, Travis will continue his rehab in Florida and will be reassessed for a return to baseball activities in approximately 4 to 6 weeks. It stands to reason that Travis will miss the first two months of the season.

The 28-year-old has now had surgery on both of his knees after having a procedure to repair the cartilage in his right knee during the 2017 season. Per Travis, tearing the meniscus was a lot better than some of the other alternatives.

"Best-case scenario," Travis told reporters Sunday morning outside the Blue Jays' clubhouse. "That's something that is the easiest of what I've done with my knees to come back from ... I can't wait to get back. I'm so sick of this stuff."

The product of Florida State has experienced plenty of difficulty trying to stay healthy during his Major League career. Travis had lengthy stints on the injured list during each of his first three seasons and has never appeared in more than 103 games in a season.

Travis owns a career .274/.314/.437 slash line across 1,169 at-bats. He was set to receive a lot of playing time at second base, but the majority of those duties will now go to Lourdes Gurriel Jr. while Eric Sogard and Richard Urena compete for the back-up infielder's spot.

Leiter out for the year

Right-hander Mark Leiter Jr. will miss the entire 2019 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery in New York earlier this week. Leiter had the procedure performed by David Altchek on March 13 to reconstruct the ulnar collateral ligament.

Leiter was competing for a spot in the bullpen this spring, but he was not expected to make the team and instead likely would have opened the year with Triple-A Buffalo. Leiter made eight appearances for the Blue Jays last season and owns a 5.53 ERA across 47 appearances in the big leagues.

Minor move

The Blue Jays acquired right-hander Jason Adam from the Royals on Sunday morning in exchange for cash considerations. Adam will join the Major League portion of Spring Training for Toronto and might have a shot to become a last-minute contender for the final spot in the bullpen.

Adam made his Major League debut last season with the Royals and he went 0-3 with a 6.12 ERA over 31 appearances. He also posted a combined 1.50 ERA over 17 appearances in the Minor Leagues.

Up next

The Blue Jays will host the Tigers on Monday afternoon in what will be a preview of the first series of the regular season. Toronto and Detroit will also square off on March 28th at Rogers Centre, providing one reason why Marcus Stroman will not be making this start. The Blue Jays are starting Stroman in a Minor League game instead, so the Tigers don't receive another look at him.
