Puerto Rico advanced to the World Baseball Classic quarterfinals in Houston with a huge win over Cuba on Monday night. Before its game against Canada on Tuesday, it appeared as though they would be getting a boost to the roster when manager Yadier Molina announced that a two-time All-Star would be joining them in the Lone Star state: José Berríos.
But later that night, Carlos Beltrán announced that Berríos actually would not be added to the roster because his insurance issues were not resolved.

Berríos had been initially denied insurance coverage because of a stint on the injured list for elbow inflammation in 2025. Team Puerto Rico had since been working to get him approved and ultimately that did not come to pass, despite Molina's original announcement.
