TORONTO -- Vladimir Guerrero Jr. was removed from Saturday afternoon’s 4-3 loss to the Mariners at Rogers Centre following the second inning. The Blue Jays announced that Guerrero is dealing with left knee discomfort and he will undergo further testing.

“He felt a little tweak in his knee, so we took him out just in case,” said manager Charlie Montoyo after the game. “He’s going to get an MRI to make sure he’s fine, so I’ll know more about it tomorrow.”

This is the same knee that gave Guerrero trouble in 2018, when he missed nearly a month and a half of the Double-A season with a strained patellar tendon. Montoyo didn’t have a chance to see Guerrero immediately after the game, but described these initial steps as precautions.

“For anybody that complains that they felt something, we’re going to take them out of the game,” Montoyo said. “Even this late in the season, we’re going to make sure.”

The 20-year-old grounded out to the shortstop in his lone plate appearance of the game, but returned to the field to play defense in the second.

In that inning, Guerrero cut in front of shortstop Bo Bichette to field a ground ball off the bat of Austin Nola, which took him across the infield and closer to second base. Guerrero made an awkward throw across the diamond -- going back against his body -- that was not in time, but he finished the rest of the inning defensively.

Bichette had a play on the ball, too, but he explained after the game that Guerrero made the right play to charge the ball.

“Every time the third baseman can get to it, they need to go get to it,” Bichette said. “I’m running away from first base and he’s running to it, so when he called me off, it’s his ball.”

Guerrero homered in the series opener against the Mariners on Friday, which was his first since hitting two on August 1. The third baseman is now hitting .275 with 14 home runs and an .811 OPS.
