BLUE JAYS ACQUIRE VARSHO

The Toronto Blue Jays have acquired OF Daulton Varsho from the Arizona Diamondbacks in exchange for OF Lourdes Gurriel Jr. and C Gabriel Moreno.

Varsho, 26, hit .235 with 23 doubles, three triples, 27 home runs, and 74 RBI for the Diamondbacks in 2022. The 5-10, 207 lb. left-handed hitter made 42 starts in center field and 61 in right, finishing with 18 Outs Above Average to lead all MLB outfielders. Varsho also filled in for 18 starts as a catcher, throwing out six of 18 attempted base stealers. Over the course of his three big-league campaigns, the native of Marshfield, WI, owns a .234 batting average and a .738 OPS.

Gurriel Jr., 29, appeared in 121 games for the Blue Jays in 2022, batting .291 with a career-high 32 doubles, a triple, five home runs, and 52 RBI. The Sancti Spiritus, Cuba, native was signed by Toronto as an international free agent in 2016 and debuted with the Major League club in 2018. Over five seasons north of the border, the 6-4, 215 lb. outfielder hit .285 with 101 doubles, five triples, 68 homers, and 254 RBI.

Moreno, 22, batted .319 across 25 big-league games in 2022 with a double, a homer, and seven RBI. The 5-11, 195 lb. catcher entered the season as the organization’s top prospect, eventually making his Major League debut on June 11 in Detroit. The Barquisimeto, Venezuela, native was signed by the Blue Jays as an international free agent on August 3, 2016.
