Here's the Brewers' player pool for their Spring Breakout game

PHOENIX -- Brewers top prospect Jesús Made batted leadoff in last year’s Spring Breakout game against the Reds, so he’s no stranger to the prospect showcase. But he’ll look a lot different when he takes the field this time around.

Made, a shortstop who ranks No. 3 on MLB Pipeline’s Top 100 prospects list, was at the top of the list of names on Milwaukee’s preliminary 40-man roster for a pair of Spring Breakout games later this month. He turned 18 years old last May, and has grown significantly in stature over the past year, going from 6-foot-1 and 187 pounds in last year’s media guide to 6-foot-1 and 221 pounds now.

And he has been turning heads in his first big league camp.

“He’s impressive physically and he wants to work,” Brewers manager Pat Murphy said. “He’s in the midst of developing right now and this is a great opportunity for him to walk in and see everything that’s going on, adjust to it and try to get his feet on the ground. He’ll learn some things about the game at the highest level.”

What is Spring Breakout?

In 2026, MLB Spring Breakout will again be a four-day event showcasing baseball’s future -- the current stars of Minor League Baseball -- in 16 exhibition games played between teams composed of each MLB organization’s top prospects. The third edition will be held from March 19-22 at Grapefruit and Cactus League stadiums during Spring Training.

In 2027, Spring Breakout will be expanded into a single-elimination tournament format, with champions being crowned in both the Grapefruit and Cactus leagues.

When are the Brewers’ games?

The Brewers have a pair of Spring Breakout games on the schedule this year. They’ll host Mariners prospects at American Family Field on March 20 at 4:10p.m. CT, then travel to face the A’s at Hohokam Stadium on March 22 at 3:05 CT. That could mean a matchup of MLB’s Nos. 3 and 4 overall prospects, with Made and A’s shortstop Leo De Vries.

Notable position players

The Brewers’ top four prospects are all shortstops, and they’re all on the preliminary roster: Made, Luis Peña, Jett Williams and Cooper Pratt. Of those four, only Peña was not in big league camp, but that’s not a reflection on his promise. The 19-year-old stole 44 bases and hit .270/.335/.422 at both Single-A levels last year in his first full professional season.

It will be the first Spring Breakout for third baseman Andrew Fischer (Brewers’ No. 6 prospect), Milwaukee’s first-round pick in last year’s Draft. Fischer has had an eventful spring, hitting his first (unofficial) big league homer in a Spring Training game against the Reds on Feb. 28 before departing to play for Italy in the World Baseball Classic.

Notable pitchers

The top-ranked pitcher on the roster is right-hander Bishop Letson (No. 9), whose elite extension was on display during his Cactus League debut on Feb. 22, when he struck out a pair of batters in a scoreless inning.

The Brewers also included a pair of pitchers from last year’s Draft on the preliminary roster: Left-hander and second-rounder J.D. Thompson (No. 16) and right-hander and 10th-round pick Braylon Owens.

Spring Breakout rosters are being constructed in two phases in 2026. Clubs initially submit a preliminary 40-man player pool on Thursday, March 5, which will then be pared down to the official 23-27 man rosters on March 18. The preliminary rosters were assembled using MLB Pipeline's Top 30 Prospects lists plus additional prospects submitted by the club.
