LOS ANGELES -- Corey Seager continued his assault on the Dodgers' record books, setting the single-season franchise record for home runs by a shortstop with 23 in Saturday's 3-2 win over the Cubs.
Facing Jason Hammel in the first inning, Seager clubbed a 401-foot shot to center to tie the game. The Cubs had scored a run off fellow rookie Julio Urías in the top of the first. In another testament to a power stroke that has established Seager as one of the game's young stars, he said he wasn't looking for a home run with the swing.
"I think it was a 1-0 slider. Not really looking to do that, just happened to happen," Seager said.
The homer is the latest development of yet another hot streak for the 22-year-old. Seager has hit safely in 17 of his last 18 games, a span in which he has batted .452 with 12 multihit games and 10 extra base hits.
Seager broke Glenn Wright's 86-year-old record of 22 homers in 1930, and with more than a month remaining in the season, he will have plenty of time to create some separation. However, don't expect that march for history to be on the phenom's mind.
"You're not really thinking about it during the games," Seager said. "It's one of those things you'll celebrate at the end of the year. Not really now, you're kind of just worried about winning."
