LOS ANGELES -- Scott Kazmir will get the taste of the 2016 postseason a little early, beginning a rehab assignment by starting Game 1 of the Triple-A Oklahoma City Dodgers' playoff series against Nashville on Wednesday.
The southpaw is scheduled to throw six innings and 90 pitches and plans to return for the Dodgers' series against the Yankees in New York if all goes well Wednesday.
A neck injury that prevented Kazmir from properly rotating his head while pitching sidelined the southpaw on Aug. 24. He threw five innings in a simulated game without incident Tuesday. As is common with the Dodgers this season, Kazmir wasn't the only pitcher to have an injury update Sunday.
Brandon McCarthy (right hip stiffness) will make a rehab start for Class A Advanced Rancho Cucamonga on Monday, but his timetable to return is still hazy. The right-hander looked excellent in his first four starts coming back from Tommy John surgery, but a complete loss of fastball command quickly derailed his season.
"He expects to pitch well and he knows he needs to pitch well. At that point in time, we can make decisions going forward," manager Dave Roberts said.
Roberts added that Brett Anderson suffered a setback with his blister during Saturday's rehab game at Rancho and was to be reassessed Sunday. The southpaw allowed six earned runs and nine hits in over two innings, coming well short of his scheduled five innings.
Alex Wood (elbow debridement surgery) will throw a bullpen session Monday with another bullpen session and two live-hitters sessions scheduled before a return to the bullpen. He said the tentative date for his return is Sept. 17, but that could be adjusted as he progresses.
