First-rounder Buehler among unsigned Draftees

LOS ANGELES -- The Dodgers have until Friday to sign their remaining Draft picks, which include three of the first eight players they selected.

Highlighting those unsigned are first-rounder Walker Buehler, a right-handed pitcher from Vanderbilt; compensation pick Kyle Funkhouser, a right-handed pitcher from the University of Louisville; and sixth-rounder Edwin Rios, a first baseman from Florida International University.

The trick for the Dodgers is to get the three signed without surpassing the club's bonus pool cap by more than five percent, which would trigger a 75-percent tax on the overage. A 5-10 percent overage would result in the 75-percent tax plus forfeiture of the club's first- and second-round picks for next year. The penalties increase with additional overages and the Dodgers are determined to avoid penalties, especially ones that involve losing Draft picks.

The Dodgers' allotted signing bonus pool for picks in rounds 1-10 this year is $7,781,700. They have roughly $4.278 million to sign the three players. If a player does not sign, his slot value is deducted from the available bonus pool.

Funkhouser, whose advisor is Scott Boras, was believed to be the toughest of the three to sign. He announced via Twitter on Friday that he would return to Louisville for his senior season, but the club has not commented on the announcement.

The durable Funkhouser, the 35th overall pick, was taken with a pick received as compensation for free agent Hanley Ramirez.

Buehler, the 24th overall pick, is a Zack Greinke type, slender and an athletic strike-thrower. Rios is a slugger fully healed from shoulder labrum surgery.
