Hernandez (hand sprain) placed on injured list

Newly acquired Negron activated as LA makes several moves

DENVER -- After the front office’s flurry of roster moves on Monday in preparation of the Coors Field series, Dave Roberts added tempering Trade Deadline expectations to his managerial duties.

“Where we’re at right now, it just puts us in position not to reach, and not to do something that not only compromises this year potentially, but in years to come,” Roberts said when asked the likelihood of an impact acquisition.

Although past Deadlines indicate the Dodgers are likely to add at least a non-marquee bullpen arm, Roberts went on to say he’s prepared to go forward with what he has.

There’s a shortage of big names and a surplus of teams seeking them. That makes for expensive asking prices, and the Dodgers almost never trade away their top prospects. They’ve been linked to virtually every reliever believed to be on the market.

They do make plenty of roster changes, like on Monday, when they:

• Placed infielder on the 10-day injured list with a left hand sprain
• Activated newly acquired utility man
• Recalled reliever
• Optioned reliever to Triple-A Oklahoma City
• Moved pitcher Tony Gonsolin from OKC to the taxi squad with a Tuesday activation likely
• And traded Minor League left-handed reliever Zac Rosscup to the Cardinals for cash

Hernandez was injured on an awkward swing last Wednesday and, although he couldn’t swing a bat, the club kept him active until they could find an emergency replacement. That became Negron, who was acquired from Seattle Sunday night in a trade for Minor League infielder Daniel Castro.

Since the All-Star break, Hernandez was slashing .400/.488/.629 with two homers, nine RBIs and a 1.116 OPS. On the season, he has 16 homers and 52 RBIs with a .238 batting average in 98 games.

Schultz appeared in one game in his second stint with the Dodgers, allowing four runs on five hits in two innings on Sunday. Sborz will rejoin the Dodgers for the third time this season to provide a fresh arm for Coors Field.

Roberts said Negron will start at second base and Russell Martin will start at catcher on Tuesday night.

Worth noting

• Gonsolin is expected to pitch on Tuesday, but Roberts previously called it a bullpen game and indicated he might not name a starter until the morning and it could be an opener. Julio Urias is a candidate. Usage Monday night will provide some clues.

• Dylan Floro threw a bullpen session and is close to being activated off the injured list after dealing with a stiff neck.
