Trevor Plouffe, who already had doubled and scored in the first, looked like he had another double, ripping a liner toward the left-center-field gap. But Gordon raced over and dived to spear the liner and he face-planted on the sod.

"Well, I don't have the speed that [Lorenzo] Cain or [Jarrod] Dyson have, so I have to dive for those balls," Gordon said. "I thought I got a good jump and he [Plouffe] is a guy with a lot of extra-base hits so you shade him a little differently."

Gordon helped out the Royals' offense by belting a game-tying homer over the right-field-wall in the fifth off former teammate Ervin Santana.

"I thought for sure it would hook foul, normally that's what I do," Gordon said. "But that one stayed in. That felt great."

Gordon was at it again on defense in the ninth by robbing Plouffe of another hit with a sliding catch.

That's what Gold Glove winners do.
